Three supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party were shot Wednesday night after gunmen opened fire on a small convoy which was being led by the candidate for Eastern St. Andrew Dr. St. Aubyn Bartlett.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 o'clock while the group was travelling in three cars in the community of Tavern.
One of the injured persons, a woman, was shot in the back.
She was reportedly travelling in a car which was transporting Dr. Bartlett.
Another woman was shot in the leg while a male supporter was grazed on his forehead.
The two women have been admitted to hospital while the male supporter was treated and released.
JLP General Secretary, Karl Samuda, spoke with our news centre from the University Hospital where a large crowd had gathered and claimed Dr. Bartlett narrowly escaped being shot.
When RJR News contacted the Papine Police late Wednesday night we were told that a team had been dispatched to investigate the shooting.
In the meantime, People's National Party candidate for Eastern St. Andrew Professor Trevor Munroe has condemned the attack on the JLP supporters.
And gunmen struck Wednesday night at a bar owned by a Jamaica Labour Party Councillor in St. Catherine leaving two persons dead and two others injured.
One of the dead persons is a policeman attached to Harmon Barracks.
The bar is operated by Councillor for the Bellevue Division of the St. Catherine Parish Council Alvin Beckford.
It's reported that shortly after 10 o'clock, a group of gunmen entered the bar at Fraser's Content and opened fire on the patrons.
Corporal Garrett Smith and a man identified as Gladstone Findlay, both residents of the community, were shot several times and died on the spot.
Mr. Beckford says Corporal Smith and Mr. Findlay were well-known supporters of the JLP.
JLP Leader Bruce Golding and Party Chairman Dr. Ken Baugh rushed to the scene shortly after the shooting.
And less than two hours later news came that a man employed as a driver to JLP candidate for East Central St. Catherine Leslie Campbell had been shot dead.
Twenty seven year old Brandon Vernon was in a bar at Knollis in St. Catherine when he and the bartender Karen Balden were fatally shot.
The JLP candidate says Mr. Vernon had earlier participated in a motorcade.
