'Butch' Stewart pledges $10 million to hurricane relief
Thursday, August 23, 2007
CHAIRMAN of the Sandals/ATL Group of Companies, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, yesterday pledged J$10 million to assist in the relief efforts of persons affected by the passage of Hurricane Dean, particularly in the tourism areas and farming communities.
The funds will be distributed through community organisations and churches in the affected areas, and specific details of the distribution will be made public as soon as they are finalised, a press statement from the group said.
"We are aware that many of our fellow citizens have suffered great loss and we want to do whatever we can to assist them in returning their lives to normal as soon as possible," Stewart told the Observer.
He said the money would go to persons who had suffered the most from Huricane Dean which side-swiped Jamaica late August 19, leaving at least three people dead, flooding communities and homes and robbing many areas of the island of electricity and water.
