A young 37 hispanic y.o female refuses to come to the hospital because she has lost her smell and appetitie and feels sluggish for one week, the husband thought nothing of it because as far as he is concerned the signs of COVID are respiratory. She says she is going out, buys a gift card for a $100 and birthday card for her 13 y.o daugther but never returns home. Instead she is rushed to the hospital and intubated in the ER, running temps of 104. ( temps like that arent normal ). You are cooking your inside. Thats the thing with COVID temps, when septic the whole body is on fire, with COVID your head and back is on fire, the front is cold and slimy. Two variations of heat in the body She stays on the Ventilator for 1 month before expiring.
The family cant visit while she was hospitalized and the nurse makes a personal visit to the family after her death to return her personal belongings and consoles the family. The family stays at her sisters house, the husband is destroyed he remakrs " she broke my heart" , the daughter stares into space, says she is fine and only answers when spoken to, the 20 y.o son visits the house and wants to return home and seems to be holding up more than anyone else.
The implication of this is, how many didnt make it to the hospital, how many were turned away when they came for Neuro/ GI symptoms. EMS during the height of this was told not to bring any patients to the hospital unless they met the criteria of hypoxia. The hospitals are doing better, the ER is down to almost empty but COVID patients are slowly dying and discharged thereby leaving us with little bed occupancy to admit regular patients.
We are doing better but the gains are small, any change and we could be back to chaos.
