PNP says Portia was superior in debate

PEOPLE'S National Party (PNP) general-secretary Donald Buchanan (aka Bagdad Bob) says that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was superior to Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Bruce Golding in every aspect of Saturday night's televised political debate.
In a conspicuously contrasting view to that of other analysts of the debate, Buchanan, who is also minister of information and development, said that the prime minister performed "really superbly".
"She was superior to the leader of the JLP in all aspects of that debate," he told journalists attending yesterday's post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
"She got her message across and she connected with the Jamaican people in a manner unprecedented," he added.
However, pressed as to whether this was a genuine opinion, in light of the generally accepted view that Golding won the debate hands down, Buchanan said that his view was informed by "what people are saying".
"I listen to what the people are saying throughout the 60 constituencies. I have been listening to the people," he said.
. There is no panic
In the meantime, Buchanan said yesterday that there was no panic within the ruling party over any recent poll showing it was trailing the JLP.
Asked at yesterday's post-Cabinet press briefing to respond to reports that there was panic within the PNP over the result of a recent poll, commissioned by the party, which shows that it had fallen behind the JLP, Buchanan did not deny the existence of the poll.
However, he told reporters that "there is absolutely no panic within the PNP". "The People's National Party remains very confident that on August 27 the party is going to be returned as the Government of Jamaica," he said.
