Security to be tightened as Port Royal prepares

Senior members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) have collaborated with security personnel from at least two government agencies to create a safety and security plan for Port Royal in Kingston, as the historic town prepares to welcome its first cruise ship on Monday.

Although Discovery 2, operated by Marella Cruises is expected to make its first call, Member of Parliament for East Kingston and Port Royal Phillip Paulwell is concerned about how the influx of visitors could affect the community, which currently boasts a very low crime rate.

Pier development to bring water, sewerage plant to Port Royal

RESIDENTS of Port Royal are to start benefiting from better water supply and a sewerage treatment plant as a result of the cruise pier development that is being undertaken by the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), in partnership with the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), which is coordinating other State agencies.

Port Royal currently has no sewerage treatment system, and instead has collection points, which are not consistently maintained.

The billion-dollar project, being undertaken by the National Water Commission (NWC), is projected to provide 250,000 gallons of water to the town and a long-needed sewage processing system.

Big support for Dancehall Mecca

Participants in the Guinness-sponsored workshop, Dance Mecca, held at D'Entrance on Constant Spring in Kingston last Saturday.

The Guinness-sponsored dance workshop, now in its third staging, washeld at D'Entrance on Constant Spring Road in Kingston. The occasion had more than 250 participants, including dancers from North America and local troupes who came out to learn from the genre's choreographers, including Prince Black Eagle, Shorty Dancer Shine and veterans John Hype and Shankle Dip.

“Dancehall dance workshops are being hosted all over the world and are really big in Europe and parts of Asia, yet up until the emergence of Dancehall Mecca, Jamaica had not hosted a workshop on this scale,” said Ramanand. “It is our mandate to make this workshop the largest and most influential in the world as dancehall culture belongs to us.”

Race against time for Port Royal cruise pier

Workmen and women are in a race against time to meet the completion deadline for the inaugural call at the Port Royal Cruise Port Terminal on Monday for the Marella Discovery 2, which is slated to dock at 8 o’clock in the morning.

During yesterday’s media sensitisation tour of the port facility, journalists were given a demonstration of the seawalk – a motorised floating berth with electronic controls that will unfold to meet the cruise ship, which will be anchored offshore. Passengers, crew members, baggage and trolleys will be transferred easily from the ship’s gangway on to the pier and then to shore.

However, the terminal building where the passengers and crew will be processed by immigration, customs, and health authorities was still without furniture and other fixtures, and workmen were busy on the job ignoring watchful eyes.

Work frenzy as Port Royal prepares for first cruise ship

WITH just two day to go before Port Royal receives its first cruise ship work is progressing at a frenzied pace on the pier development at Old Coal Wharf, just outside of the entrance to the town.

Professor Gordon Shirley President of The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), which is developing the port, told journalists yesterday that the cruise ship lines have agreed to come to Port Royal, with the understanding that the pier is a work in progress.

“It is not a finished terminal, but it is in a state that is acceptable for having the ships come in,” he said yesterday morning during a media sensitisation tour of the development, and Fort Charles, one of the main attractions in the town.

Professor Shirley pointed to the development of the Falmouth pier in 2011, noting that its terminal building was not yet roofed when the first vessel arrived, and the shops were not usable.
