  • Forward With China

Many Jamaicans have criticized the deepening relationship with China because it’s seen as anti-USA and because the Chinese have been proven to be untrustworthy. I agree that we need to be wary in our approach, but they are the only foreign country with the financial clout that has stepped forward to invest their money in Jamaica in a major way to unlock its potential. I ask, name me one school or hospital that the USA has built in Jamaica since our long relationship with them since our independence?

Holness talks up deepening relationship with Chinese as more investments, exports set to flow

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday revealed that the Chinese government has indicated an interest in rolling out major investments in the Caymanas Economic Zone.

Addressing Parliament last night, Holness said that his working visit to China earlier this month was an “eye-opening” experience.

“There are issues obviously because we have to figure out how we are going approach this. Are we going to treat it on a sole source or do we treat it as a strategic investment, or do we put out open tender? … Decisions [are] to be made,” Holness said, promising to update Parliament with further details as the Government moves ahead with its development plan.

“The strategic partnership positions Jamaica to pursue development cooperation with China in keeping with our own clearly defined national development strategic priorities on the basis of mutual respect and shared benefits,” the prime minister said.

Holness re-emphasised yesterday that Jamaica will not negotiate any new loan programmes with China as it seeks to reduce the country’s debt.

“Infrastructure projects will, therefore, take the modalities of joint-venture partnership, public-private partnership or private-sector partnerships directly between Jamaican firms and Chinese firms,” he said.

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Tourism official says China market poses challenge in push to Far East

TOURISM authorities have begun to look in earnest towards the Far East for new markets to sell destination Jamaica but say China, in particular, poses a challenges because of the unique nature and requirements of the Chinese visitor.

Director of tourism at the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) Donovan White says Jamaica wants to venture into the new markets of China, Japan and India over the next few years, but at the moment has “deprioritised” China to the back end of that period, partly because of “readiness issues for the Chinese traveller that the destination needs to understand”.

He was speaking yesterday at a meeting of the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) with officials of the tourism ministry and its agencies, at Gordon House.

“Language is a big one (issue). There is a tremendous turn-off for the Chinese traveller to be guided on a tour by someone speaking English,” he said.

White further explained that there is a vast difference in the eating habits of the Chinese that local hotels will adapt to, in order to provide the best service.

“The menus of the Chinese is significantly different than our own and that of the menu appetite of the hoteliers in Jamaica. For example, the Chinese typically eat for breakfast what we eat for dinner. So we are on opposite sides of the menu offerings,” he explained, noting also that the Chinese also have particular expectations for their accommodations.
