Phillips: Robotics a pathway to Ja’s riches

University of the West Indies sustainable development professor Anthony Clayton has concurred with Dr Peter Phillips’ conviction that Jamaica must begin to take its children fully into “the digital age”, commonly called the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Phillips, president of the People’s National Party (PNP), made the statement yesterday while addressing thousands of party supporters at the organisation’s 81st annual conference at the National Arena in Kingston.

“We are going to make our country rich and develop the talents of our children. I come to heal the scars of history. Our education must focus on innovation,” Phillips said. “We must have a special drive in areas of science and technology, robotics, animation, coding, and the development of computer applications. It must be done in every school across the island”.

You observe such groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting, nation-building works and di fuss ting yuh want is fi fass inna people money bizniz?? But ah wha dis faada...

The primary funding and 100% of the work is from private sources. There is a partnership with the MoE arranged by an involved forum member through which there's grant funding for some operational equipment directed to certain schools... subject to particular criteria.

So what has been built is a unique Public/Private Partnership which is led by private organizations in JA and NYC

People are not that interested in this enough to make social media driven fundraising significant. Jamaicans like education but not sufficiently to make useful contributions to something of this nature. We'd be spinning our wheels with that. It's not "exciting" enough like sports or music for most

Grant funding from like-minded foundations is the best way to go with projects like this. Gotta spend time pitching in boardrooms not begging on Facebook

But you're correct about linking this to pop culture. Not for funding per se...but to penetrate the cosmic and grab the attention of kids

The idea to use pop music to drive kids' interest in robotics is not new. In the US FIRST uses performers like will.i.am and others in that role. But FIRST has paid professional admin & marketers, an annual budget north of $175M plus 25 years of history. Our championship is approaching its 2nd year.

We intend to do something similar but this takes time, money and manpower. The bandwidth to acquire and manage popular acts (even pro bono) for this role is not in place yet. Getting the most basic elements of the JA program down with an all-volunteer work crew is already a handful with our hand-to-mouth financing.

Lots of priorities to get squared away first....but that entertainment promo element will come in time.
