Gloria’s goes hi-tech as it expands to Ocho Rios ... to be used as template for other stores


Gloria’s Seafood City, a choice eatery that has its genesis in the quiet fishing village of Port Royal, east Kingston, but which attracts customers from all over the island, has expanded the business to Ocho Rios, St Ann.

The 1,300 square feet space at Turtle River Park in Jamaica’s second tourist capital is home to Gloria’s fourth location. The team that runs the fast-growing business is emphatic that the new location is not a franchise, but the familial embodiment of Gloria Prawl’s 47-year-old legacy.

“The system is set up so that we have our restaurant managers and their line staff, and we keep a tab on the operations using technology,” he said, noting that the three smart cookers at Bottom Road, Victoria Pier, and Ocho Rios cost US$35,000 each. Gloria’s spent another J$5 million on the inventory system that covers all four locations. The inventory and IT system was supplied by TechPro.

Tourism needs tech boost, says Bartlett


WITH the regional tour ism industry projected to contract by 30 per cent this year following a devastating blow from the coronavirus pandemic, players in the sector are being encourgaed to look at investment in technology to lead the rebound.

So far this year there has been a 75 per cent decline in tourist arrivals to the region amid continued travel restrictions and a general reduction in persons heading overseas for vacations.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, while speaking at last Friday's Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association forum, said along with the expected training and development of human capital, investment in technology must be pursued to meet the demands of tourism in the COVID-19 era.

“There's going to be a greater dependence on technology to drive a number of experiences in the region. There's going to be a lot more reliance on health standards and more importantly, there's going to be a lot more reliance on touchless technology – both at our airports for a more seamless entry as well as in our hotels and our attractions across the region,” said Bartlett.
