South West St. Ann PNP candidate injured on the campaign trail

People's National Party (PNP) candidate for South West St. Ann, Glenville Shaw, has been admitted to a hospital in Kingston after being injured in a mishap while on the campaign trail in St. Ann Tuesday night.

Mr. Shaw, who is 67, broke his femur after he fell while trying to hop onto a moving pick-up.

The femur, or thigh bone, forms part of the hip and the knee.

Mr. Shaw's daughter, Analeene Shaw, says her father's injury appears serious and he is likely to spend several days in hospital.

She told RJR News that he is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday.

“He was jumping on the back of a moving pick up, he fell on his right leg and they had to rush him to Spauldings Hospital. In Spauldings they had assessed him and now he’s en route to a hospital in Kingston where an orthopedic doctor has made arrangements to receive him where they will do further investigations and operations,” she said.

It is not yet clear how Mr. Shaw's injury will affect his campaign for the August 27 General Election.

Mr. Shaw is running against the Jamaica Labour Party's Ernest Smith.

In the meantime, the People's National Party says it will await a report from Mr. Shaw's doctors Wednesday to determine how election campaigning in South West St. Ann will proceed.

General Secretary Donald Buchanan has described Mr. Shaw's accident as unfortunate.

“Well first of all we are deeply regretful of what has happened. We are very concerned that Comrade Shaw recovers as quickly as possible from this injury,” said Mr. Buchanan.

“However with respect to campaign activities we will just have to wait and see what the doctors have to say tomorrow and thereafter we will determine to what extent he will be out there during the next three weeks,” he continued.

I wish Mr. Shaw a speedy recovery! Why at his age him a try hop van?
