While I support the investment in by the chinese, the government should put a rule in place where these companies have to list at least 20 percent of their Jamaican investment on the Jamaican stock market so some Jamaican can benefit and have a little say in how these companies are run. Give Jamaicans a chance to reinvest.

I notice the bauxite company has sent more than 100 Jamaicans to train in China for management and specialist positions. That is very good and future thinking. Our only option can't be to sell to the chinese but create some true partnership, but that is upon the government, private and public sector.

A true partnership is needed.

Shaw says the Americans have no interest,they are the number 1 contributors to the IADB and has veto power .

Infrastructure is key to development,good roads mean an increase in local commerce of goods and services.I say that to ask what can we afford to invest in that will bring that value to the economy without borrowing money.

The question for an alternative still stands?

Pumping in more money ever solve any problem in Jamaica?. How about rearranging priorities to find the money to fix the problems?.That cant work?. Or the thieves saying it cant work because that would mean less opportunity for kickbacks and stealing?.

Rearrange what?. Priorities!!. If the things they need from the Chinese are low priority then postpone it until you are in a better place, and if it is so so important and immediate then push it ahead of other things for funding. What, Jamsican government doesn't collect taxes or is only poor people the collect taxes from?

Jamaica is 56 years old, can you point out an institution, a road or even a school that the USA has built for us (genuine question). The Cubans built us a school that helped put Jamaica on the lips of the world. The Chinese are building us roads and ports. There’s always a price to pay one way or another and we’ve been paying for USA’s “investments” for 56 years.

The USA supposed to build school and road for us?. Cuba supposed to build school and road for us?

Highway 2000, the IPO — a testimony to the vision of Kingsley Thomas

While the investing public ponders on whether to invest in the initial public offering (IPO) of shares in TransJamaican Highway Limited (TJH), the concessionaire for the east-west corridor of Highway 2000, it is useful to take a brief look at the history of the first tolled highway in Jamaica.

One cannot forget the negatives which were spewed on the concept when it was first announced in 2000, with several persons in the local media branding it “the highway in the sky”.

Some even suggested it was an impossible dream, never to materialise, and several other voices claimed it was a waste of money and that the financing of the existing road network was the option to be pursued.

Highway 2000 was even ridiculed by a major international funding agency which stated that Jamaicans would never pay tolls. It was also criticised vehemently by sections of the fraternity of architects and engineers.
