  • Kingston hosts earn US$2.4m from Airbnb service in 2017

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness says there is scope for greater expansion of the Airbnb service in Jamaica, which earned hosts in Kingston US$2.4 million in 2017.

According to data from Airbnb, there are now 3,100 hosts in Jamaica, up from 2,300 in December 2016. Listings also saw an increase from 4,000 in 2016 to 5,900 in 2017. Visitor usage saw the most significant increase from 32,000 in 2016 to 59,500 in the last 12 months.

In the meantime, the prime minister said the tourism sector continues to experience unprecedented growth.

He informed that overall, the country recorded a growth of 5.4 per cent for the first six months of this year.

My understanding is that much of it is in and around Trench Town. Let's see how long before the government changes the rules so that a Mexican or Spanish hotel chain can build a "Garden Inn" or "Express" beside Culture Yard so that the small man gets bypassed.

      Attractions Sector On The Rise

Licensing among tour operators and other attractions has increased rapidly in the last three years, concurrent with the increase in tourist visits, which has fuelled demand for entertainment and tours.

In the past three years, the number of licensed attractions has more than doubled from 32 to 77 - reflecting a growth of 43 or 134 per cent.

Within that period, Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) issued 29 new licensees to market entrants, including 11 last year.

Licences are renewed in three-year cycles, TPDCo said.

"We have been moving towards the development of more community-based enterprises, more home-stay enterprises and more unique types of attractions," said Julian Patrick, director of product development and community tourism. "The new attractions include those using culture and history as a pivot."

Much of Jamaica's hotels are foreign owned - the product of foreign direct investment. But the attractions sector, Bartlett says, offers Jamaicans an opportunity to claim a piece of the lucrative industry. The TEF/EXIM loan, he added, offers the means through which attractions could finance growth of their businesses.

gwaan Bartlett. You made some very good moves in the last 2 years

Providing loans at 4 percent from the TEP tax on visitors for small Entrepreneurs in the industry.
          Providing pension for tourism workers.
Providing training for the industry and high schoolers who want to enter as professionals and junior managers.
          Developing Port Royal
          Encouraging food and culture
          Plus others.

This will help retain more dollars for the locals involved.

5ways to make money with Airbnb

“On Thursday, August 16, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that Airbnb hosts in Kingston earned over US$2.4 million in 2017. This is a giant step in the right direction for Jamaican entrepreneurs. Airbnb is an online platform based in San Francisco, California, that allows regular people to offer their homes, villas, rooms or unique accommodations to others who are visiting their location for a set price. With Jamaica being a major hub for tourism in the Caribbean, and visitors looking for varying experiences, this market is on an upward trend.” Lyttle explained.

The rules that say you cannot be stopped from opening a hotel anywhere you want, big man. Change that rule so that the areas around Culture Yard is exclusive for small mom and pop ooperations. What is so hard about that?.What it should be a free-for-all, so that "Hotel Plaza de Mexicano" can open a Culture Yard branch?

There you go with the bogey man S word again, Bricky. Well, maybe the people of Trench Town do need a dose of socialism since the overdose of capitalism hasn't worked for them, at least not so far.

"Capitalism affords economic freedom, consumer choice, and economic growth. Socialism, which is an economy controlled by the state and planned by a central planning authority, provides for a greater social welfare..."

that scenario is textbook socialism...in a capitalist scenario anybody could build a hotel/airbnb to host visitors to trench town...which would increase the number of visitors who come to trench town with money to spend in the community...the consumer will make the choice if he stays in a mom & pop or hotel mexicana...you see how that works?

So why don't you try and get a permit to build a 24 hour go-go club next to Vaz Prep.

Capitalism doesn't mean free-for-all or a state without laws, or does it in Jamaica where so called capitalism is not free marketing but paid cronyism. DISGRACEFUL!!!

Investment Property Purchases Rise As Short-Stay Rentals Spike

Jamaican realtors, property developers and bankers selling mortgages are reporting more interest in investment property purchases, and a concurrent upswell in mid-income developments in Kingston that is partly a response to that demand.

Devon Young, a developer who is finalising a new residential complex in Kingston called The Hamptons, financed through the Jamaica Mortgage Bank, (JMB), told the Financial Gleaner that over 90 per cent of interest in the property was driven by prospective short-term rental business through Airbnb.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
