• Technology Minister dodges questions about Solutrea

On Tuesday, Commerce and Technology Minister, Phillip Paulwell, refused to comment on the controversial deal which fell through with telecommunications company Solutrea.

The Minister, who was at the centre of a questionable sales agreement between the company and the government for the country’s fourth cellular license, dodged questions from reporters on Tuesday.

At a press conference on Monday, officials from Solutrea told journalists that the license will be returned unconditionally to the government.

The company also said the Technology Ministry will return payments made by Solutrea.

It said the main reason for returning the license was the fact that the issue was politicised.

The license was granted to Solutrea by Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell, but was revoked after concerns were raised that it had been granted without the proper scrutiny.

In the meantime, Mr. Paulwell launched the Incubator and Entrepreneurial Production Centre Project Tuesday morning.

The production centre will aid young entrepreneurs in setting up their own businesses.

According to the Commerce Minister, the centre will, among other things, facilitate the creation of employment and contribute to growth in Gross Domestic Product.

Paulwell cleared on Solutrea - Cabinet review team finds nothing "untoward"
published: Wednesday | August 1, 2007

A Cabinet review team, set up to investigate the awarding of a telecoms license to Solutrea Jamaica Limited, on Monday absolved Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell of any wrong doing in the matter.
Information Minister Donald Buchanan said the team had found nothing "untoward" in the awarding of the license.
Buchanan disclosed the review team's findingsduring the weekly post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, while responding to questions from journalists.
"The finding of the probe is that nothing untoward had occurred, that proper procedure had in fact been followed," he said.
When pressed by members of the media on whether the Cabinet had found Paulwell's action blameless in the Solutrea affairs, Buchanan asked: "What would he be blamed for?"
Late payment
He added: "You mean that there was a late payment but a late payment does not mean an absence of due diligence."
Also on Monday, Solutrea announced that it would be pulling out of Jamaica as a result of the recent controversy surrounding the granting of the telecoms license by the Ministry of Industry Technology Energy and Commerce. The review team was comprised of Buchanan, Paulwell, Dr. Jean Dixon, permanent secretary in the Technology Ministry, and Dr. Carlton Davis, cabinet secretary.
Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

What puzzles me is how the
media has nothing good to say od Paulwell. In the same breath I saw on the web where Paulwell masterminded a deal that created jobs in the west. This in itself says something about the Jakan media. Pity it's less than 5% that has internet access in Ja. Have free ride for now jakan media, but remember "time longer than rope".
