  • JLP leader accuses government of underperformance

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Bruce Golding's has described claims by the Portia Simpson Miller administration that the country cannot afford free tuition and health care for Jamaicans as "A terrible indictment on governance in Jamaica."

Mr. Golding was reacting to the scorn being poured on his election promises by the Portia Simpson Miller administration.

Monday night, it was Mr. Golding's turn to lash out.

He declared that Government had wrecked the country to the extent that it balks at spending less than one per cent of the national budget to free up education and health to the poor.

Mr. Golding says the cynicism which has greeted his promises is understandable.

He suggests that this cynicism is predicated on the myth generated by the Government's dismal performance.

This, he says has resulted in the Jamaica's inability to achieve more than two per cent economic growth and a belief that $2.6 billion more on education and health is a big deal.

He asserts that Jamaica under his watch can achieve a 10 and 11 per cent growth similar to Trinidad and Antigua.

Mr. Golding said much of the JLP's plans will be financed by the private sector.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
