Jamaica and Mexico on Friday signed two agreements which will see the abolition of visas for diplomats and an inter- agency cooperation agreement with both countries.
Jamaica's Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator Anthony Hylton, and Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Relations, Ambassador Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, signed the agreements on behalf of their respective countries.
The agreements were signed at the conclusion of the seventh Jamaica/Mexico Binational Commission, which was held at the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in New Kingston.
The visa abolition will apply only to diplomats and official passport holders who will be exempted from getting visas to travel to both countries.
Meanwhile, the inter-agency agreement sets up a framework for collaboration between Jamaica Trade and Invest, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and the Mexican Business Council for External Trade, Investment and Technology.
Jason Hall, regional manager of the Caribbean and Latin American Markets at Jamaica Trade and Invest told The Gleaner that the agreement would allow further inter-agency cooperation, institutional support, partnerships, exchange of information and technical support between both countries.
Minister Hylton expressed satisfaction with the outcome of Friday's meeting. "It is our responsibility to ensure that the necessary follow-up action is taken to implement the decisions made in this meeting to further demonstrate the success of the Bi-national Commission mechanism in improving the quality of our relationship," he urged.
