I often wondered what the Relationship to New York's "Palisades Parkway" was.

A few months ago, for reasons I can't recall, I looked up "Palisadoes" in Wikipedia. There, I was introduced to the word tombolo. It's similar to a peninsula but I guess it's a matter of size and permanence.

Interesting history of that stretch of land. I have already heard that Port Royal was not originally connected to the mainland but this gives an account of what happened and when.

it was connected before the earthquake...then it was a cay...then a natural sand bar reformed to connect it back to the mainland...
