  • Finland sees skills teaching as the future of education

Finland has long been renowned for the quality of its education and always scores highly in international league tables.

Now it is rethinking how it teaches in the digital age - seeking to place skills, as much as subjects, at the heart of what it does. But not everyone is happy, and there are fears it could bring down standards.

I guess some folks like these Scandinavians are just more evolved

All mi ah look mi naw si many Black folks inna dat deh category. Wi stuck inna di 1960s...fussing over relatively useless standardized tests, quizzes and defunct ranking of schools

The result: Many folks just aspiring to become the best servants they can be.... a few feeling accomplished to sit in an office pushing paper...and virtually none creating anything of modern value.

This is the pathetic outcome of backward leadership. Lawd deliva wi from dis ignorance

Yes these Scandinavians are seriously innovative in this area and clearly confident enough to adapt to change instead of worrying primarily about short term rankings.

The positives outweigh the negatives, but I have a problem with this, "to allow students to choose a topic relevant to them and base subjects around it." The article didn't state at what age are students "allowed" to choose their topics. I would assume that age would be by the time they hit preteen, and even then, what do kids know what they really want to do as adults.

As I said, more positives than negatives, but I don't see Finland leading the world in innovations.

Actually it's a tech leader. For a tiny country with a population of ~5 million it punches waaay above it's weight in tech innovation.

The first map (below) charts the percentages of economic output countries devote to R&D investment. The U.S. ranks sixth. Israel is in first place, followed by Sweden, Finland, Japan, and Switzerland, which make up the top five. South Korea, Germany, Denmark, and France round out the top ten. Canada ranks 13th. The BRICs are much further down the list, with Russia 22nd, China 26th, Brazil 31st and India 38th.

By combining all three of these measures, we end up with an overall Global Technology Index, a broad assessment of the technological and innovative capabilities of the world’s leading nations. The United States ranks third. Finland takes the top spot, followed by Japan

Can't make out where JA...or ANY so called "Black" country is. But we're no doubt right up there in the low level servant category. We're too busy with runnin', dancin', singin', playin' ball, servin' fat tourists... and celebrating obsolete crap like a big, televised QUIZ as a great academic exercise

                  Beyond pathetic

The way how Trump a move with his determination to eradicate everything Obama, look for the USA to fall further down that list fast in the next few years.

Nordic is the wider definition. the Finns are afrom a different stock and with no language overlap.

Both Finns and Scandis freely tell you this.
