More than Gold Medals, my salute to Jamaica Track and Field

In a world of billions of people and countries whose geography swallows Jamaica thousands of times, Jamaica has been able to leave its marks. However, what I would like to say is that track and field has given many young and poor Jamaicans more opportunities for success off the playing field than any other sporting event. We tend not to focus on the kid who is now a teacher, a professor or doctor who would never have had that opportunity otherwise. Cricket and football are great for Jamaica, but only 11 play

Mr Grayham, Wolmer's Boys is a downtown all boys school and should be commended for its top 10 achievement. Compared to Campion we get the 2nd best GSAT boys, less affluent parents and we are an all boys institution. Yes we do recruit sports students but their success helps to attract good GSAT boys who chose schools based on sporting success.
Yep Wolmers should indeed be congratulated

Nuff credit also to your private prep school....which allows Wolmers and a few others to curate a good quality intake out of GSAT.

Maybe there should be a push for more secondary schools to have this better quality private prep school education to feed on. Alas...not many can afford this

And perhaps schools should double down on trying their best to upgrade the vast majority of primary level students.. i.e. the mediocre-poor quality 90% ... esp boys who're woefully behind girls

That's two different approaches to Jamaica's sad reality. One trying to avoid or minimize the core problem of pathetic (public school) primary level intake quality...And the other facing up to it and taking the heat for so doing.

As is everything in life...truth is mostly found below the surface...not in headlines

To say Wolmers is a "downtown school", though technically accurate, is equivalent to saying Munro is a "deep rural school".

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
