The yute Gavin Smith who got the Florida Institute of Technology scholarship thru US FIRST started the robotics program in either 1st or 2nd form.

So he's worked it for 5 or 6 years...thru about 10-12 different US competitions, nuff tikles and 2 World Championship appearances. Plus he is a part of the original Microsoft IT Academy/Imagine Cup software team at JC. Dats nuff farrin exposure and nuff dollas invested juss inna dat 1 likkle yute. Hopefully worthwhile for him

I always suspected he would/will be something of a tech star

I remember when he was the youngster on the team. Nice to see his progress thus far. Those experiences must have built a lot of confidence in him as well.

Yep...the times they are a'changin'. This revolution will not be denied...but it will definitely be televised

                        Calabar launches robotics programme

BY PENDA HONEYGHAN Career & Education writer honeyghanp@jamaicaobserver.com

                        Sunday, September 18, 2016

Supported by a wealth of global research that has found that boys learn better in hands-on, practical approaches, all-boys school Calabar High has positioned itself to revolutionise the educational development of its students with its recently launched robotics programme.

Robotics has been touted to improve and encourage learning in STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.

In what has been described by the school administration as a first in Jamaica, the programme is being integrated into the school’s curriculum on a phased basis, and was introduced to first and second form students on the institution’s 104th anniversary, last Monday.
“This is an exciting programme!” 12-year-old first former Daesean Channer told the Jamaica Observer following the programme launch.

“My dream is to become an engineer and this will help to do that. I will also be able to do better in mathematics and other science areas. I am happy to see this being introduced and that I am able to benefit,” he said.

JC intensifies innovation in STEM Education

JC adds Construction Project Management to curriculum

Jamaica College (JC) has added Construction Project Management to its curriculum for fifth and sixth forms. The initiative is the brainchild of Gore Developments Limited (GDL), with administrative input from the Gore Family Foundation.

A total of 14 students will benefit from the course, which will be certified by HEART and is fully sponsored by GDL, whose principal, Phillip Gore, is a JC old boy. A news release from GDL said that the company developed the confidence to create the Construction Project Management course after partnering with ATL on equipping the nutrition lab in JC’s Phillip Gore Building.

“Professionals and close associates of GDL, with years of experience in the fields of architecture, project management, quantity and land surveying together with civil engineering, will conduct this course to impart their considerable expertise on a weekly basis over the next school year,” the news release said.

“It is entirely paperless, computerised, high-tech and each student gets maximum exposure to all the different software programmes used by the various professionals.”

Again this is excellent and long overdue. I hope JC can reach out to other schools and have this replicated.

Respek mi boss...and you're on the money with that replication thought. We're really about a national development mission...not one-upmanship or merely uplifting one school.

The national development mission requires collaboration...so early on we connected with Utech's Engineering School & their IEEE program for technical help. Also some engineering alum from yard & foreign. We also arranged video-conferencing teaching sessions with some US robotics programs since we really had none @ home to model.

After the school's technical capacity was built & the yutes up to snuff...they were able to compete effectively in foreign competitions...actually a lot more than effectively

But the remit to the robotics group was always: Don't keep it a secret or just for yourselves....spread the experience as far as possible. Dis much bigga dan 1 school.

So they've gone out (and also hosted) for demos in many secondary & primary schools, community fairs, to politicians & business leaders etc... Also done numerous TV & radio shows.

This includes assisting Cbar which now has a program A certain high profile girls' school on Constant Spring Rd may be next if they press along.
National awareness is now HIGH....but project execution has not caught up yet

Dem nuh stop spreading the good word about the critical importance for national development of STEM education & innovation capacity-building....to create a 21st century-ready workforce. If we don't create that type of workforce & associated businesses...we're going NOWHERE as you know

I'd like to think the message is being assimilated...slowly...but wi dun know seh slow & steady wins the race
