    What does Turkey gain by currying favor with Russia,they support different agendas in Syria,Russia can't help them economically.

      It is true that Turkey's and Russia's interests are not completely aligned. Both countries are using the threat of a possible alliance to play both ends against the middle....and extract concessions from the West. Standard geopolitics

      The US just at best, allowed or at worst participated in the recent coup attempt to remove Erdogan....Just as the US/CIA did in the successful 1980 regime change coup. (Turkey's coup not JA )

      This regime change attempt came in July....after Erdogan began in May-June to patch up relations with Russia....It's NOT a coincidence

      So since the US/West is sour on Erdogan and Turkey is obviously not joining the EU in the foreseeable future (if ever)...Turkey is currently geopolitically isolated and needs to form new relationships to chart a forward course.

      And yes...Russia most definitely can help Turkey economically...via trade.

      * Energy (they're planning a HUGE nuclear energy complex at Akkuku) and gas (they're planning the Turk Stream gas system to convert Turkey into a key energy hub into Southern Europe)

      Of course the US is trying to bury those strategic projects i.e. economic warfare

      * Their commodity & services trade is huge for Turkey...supplying to Russia agricultural products, textiles, clothing, construction services etc...and Russia is the 2nd biggest tourist market for Turkey

      Also Russia is key to Turkey hooking up with China via their New Silk Road trade route to Europe. That's a $1 TRILLION project which if implemented...will transform global trade. The US is NOT involved at all

      On the political side Russia is key for Turkey:

      * Russia is now the DECIDER in Syria since its intervention...NOT the US. So Turkey needs to deal with Russia as well as the US/West/NATO to handle Syria matters.

      Notice how the "Assad must go" rhetoric is terminated?? Assad aint going anywhere soon and Russia's intervention is the reason. So even China is now jumping in ...seeing that it's now advantage Russia/Assad

      * Turkey's biggest issue is not ISIS (which it along with the US often supplies/ignores/allows... to undermine Assad)....but the Kurds and their demand for an independent state. Kurds are 25-30% of Turkey's population...So an independent Kurdistan would be an absolute DISASTER for Erdogan

      It is IMPOSSIBLE to solve those issues without coming to terms with Putin...even for the US as Barry is now discovering

      The other option is Killary's.....MORE WAR

        Good perspectives although I don't think America had anything to do with the coup,they might have known about it and that in itself is unforgivable given geo political perceptions.I too believe Erdogan is playing both sides for his political interest ,is it good for Turkey's interest?

        Time will tell.
