  • Flying rainbow flag is disrespectful to Jamaica's laws - AG

Jamaica’s Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte faced a tidal wave of criticism for an ‘insensitive’ tweet that slammed the flying of the rainbow flag in Jamaica following the mass shooting incident in Orlando, Florida on Sunday.

In a tweet posted on Monday, June 13 the lawyer seemingly took issue with symbol of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community – the rainbow flag – being flown at the US Embassy in Kingston.

“I strongly condemn the #OrlandoNightClubShooting but find it disrespectful of Jamaica’s laws to have [the] #RainbowFlag flown here. #MyPersonalView,” she wrote.

The tweet was not received favourably by many Jamaican users of Twitter, who bashed the Member of Parliament for not only recognising that the flag was flown as a sign of solidarity with the 49 gay men and women murdered in the deadliest domestic incident on home soil since the 9/11 terror attacks, but also that within embassy walls, jurisdiction belongs to the United States.

“The US Embassy is foreign soil and [as] such they can do that plus more. I’m not so sure what is so offensive,” one Twitter user contended.

The US Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday, June 14, responded to a tweet made by Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte, who took great issue with the rainbow flag being flown in the country on Monday.

The embassy, in a tweet posted just after 4am on Tuesday, wrote: “@mmalahooforte we’re listening. Explain the legal reasoning? It [the Orlando shooting] was an attack of terror and hate, targeting the LGBT community!”

Malahoo Forte’s tweet has received backlash and support from varied groups and people in the island since its initial posting late Monday evening, as while some defended her stance, others took issue with the ‘insensitive’ gesture.

The Attorney General’s tweet came more than 12 hours after the US Embassy had originally expressed its intent to fly the American flag at half-mast alongside the rainbow flag as a sign of solidarity on Monday. The US Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday, June 14, responded to a tweet made by Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte, who took great issue with the rainbow flag being flown in the country on Monday.

By the way, who determined that all who died were gay?

I know hetero people who have been to gay-themed restaurants in Manhattan.

This woman sounds like another in the long list of jokers. It ssems like hers is a comment from one who has to be heard at all times. Unfortunately our country is full of that type.
