  • Resumption of hanging - that's the best the minister can do?

    Ok, people.

The answer to the crime problem isn’t easy, but it’s simple – the police need to be smart enough, and motivated enough, first, to solve a crime, and second, to build a case that can be successfully prosecuted. And the government needs to ensure that they have the resources, training, and support to do it. That’s it. That’s all. End of %$#$%$% story.

Add to that some good, tough, visionary and proactive management with some balls. That’s it. Yeah, you’ll want to look at all the other socio-economic factors that might encourage crime, but that’s for long-term solutions. For now, in terms of dealing with whatever crime exists, that’s it. That’s all. It doesn’t matter what kind of music they listen to, and it doesn’t matter how superstitious they might be. All that matters is your ability to find evidence proving they committed the crime and that you catch them, whoever they might be. If the DPP doesn't want to do their job after that, then we'll deal with the DPP, but you first.

So please stop repeating the same tired pointless 1980's bullshit each time there are a few murders. At least come up with new bullshiit.

Nobody gives a shiit about hanging if you won’t be caught, and in ways you won't understand, there might be a few who don’t fear death, anyway, so big deal. The strong likelihood of being caught is ALWAYS the biggest deterrent to crime, so catching them must be the priority, and we can discuss what to do with them after that. If the resumption of hanging is the bright idea of the Minister of Security, then that means the Prime Minister, just like his predecessor, has chosen the wrong person for the job.

And speaking of wrong person chosen for the job…really, Mr. Commissioner? More soldiers on the street is your inappropriate and stupid response, in 2016? Because you and your cops are so %$#$#@#$ incompetent that we might as well leave it to soldiers who have no training in police work, and have no %$#$@#$ business doing police work? That’s the message that statement sends, in addition to making it obvious that you don't know what soldiers are for. Shut up and sit the $%$# down.

And as for all the other people who trot out the same crap along with them every year...get on a plane and go to Texas, or some other Republican-controlled part of the US where that kind of stupidity is fashionable these days. Vote for Trump while you’re at it.

You ok there Mo'?? I hope so...

A few years after I moved to T&T the government hanged eight or nine men (1999) in a short space of time. There was an eerie silence that pervaded the general community for a few weeks, certainly in the days immediately following the hangings. It was as if you received the worst news of your life and needed time to digest it. People were in a daze for days, and criminal activity, nowhere at the level it is now, did abate.

Now I am not an advocate of capital punishment, but I often wonder if it in fact wouldn't be a deterrent, if it were to be carried out consistently or,if people, after a while, would become inured to the whole thing and carry on as usual.

As far as the police work is concerned, yes, that needs to improve and improve drastically ASAP.

Quick question - they apprehended and charged the men they hanged, right?

              True wud!
Sadly, there have been times when homicide detectives were called to a crime scene of multiple murders.Invariably, the intended target was killed and a bunch of people fir just being there, stiff prison sentence didn't deter anything,if anything it compounded the situation, the stiffest penalty will somehow make a difference though.

I'm happy with it deterring the convicted murderer ... Any further deterrent is a plus

For some of them hanging constitutes humane punishment.
