  • Nile Rodgers (and CHIC): I really miss Historian:

Last weekend, I went to a concert that featured CHIC & Nile Rodgers .

I must admit that what I knew of Rodgers--was nothing compared with what I came away form the concert knowing.........

Nile Rodgers IMO, is ranked with Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield et al. ....a renouned prolific song writer/producer on the highest level.

... and he is still making hits. I think he even scored a grammy with Pharrel and Daft Punk on a hit they recently had.

...yes ... I was playing one of his songs recently and wondered what happened to him, I didn't realize he was working on so many hits.

I always found it interesting that Chic started out life as a rock band but couldn't get any interest from the record companies because they thought a black rock band was not commercially viable.

Contrast that to Chris Blackwell who decided that the way to break Bob Marley and the Wailers was to market them as a sort of alternative rock band, and so made a deliberate effort to make songs like Concrete Jungle on the Catch a Fire have a type of rock sound. And it worked.

Perhaps Blackwell at the time had the need to take more risks than the US major labels did.

When you are big label you tend to buck the trend less. Younger producer normally have their feet to the ground and have to come with new stuff.
