  • Former Ambassador to USA disputes SCQ match outcome

Jamaica’s former Ambassador to the United States Professor Stephen Vasciannie has written to Television Jamaica’s (TVJ) General Manager Claire Grant, asking her to rectify a dispute over the outcome of the Schools’ Challenge Quiz quarter-final match between Kingston College (KC) and Campion College.

According to Vasciannie, the problem needs Grant’s intervention as it could undermine and weaken the reputation of the competition.

“Having watched the match, I am convinced that the result, as announced by
TVJ, is incorrect,” Ambassador Vasciannie, a KC old boy, said in reference to the match aired on March 18.

His letter came after KC Principal Dave Myrie wrote to TVJ filing a complaint about the final score and asking the television station to either review the situation and declare KC the winner, or arrange a rematch.

Seems like certain schools now travel with a team of lawyers when competing.

I would like to think that Vasciannie benefitted from a faulty buzzer system in a final against Munro back in the day.

KC has been on the benefit side of 'controversial decisions' in the recent years.

How did the Camperdown dispute go? Was Camperdown forced to replay the Ardenne match on Monday and it yes what was the final score?

Is the system rigged? Let's do a flash back where an answer was accepted as correct in one year and incorrect in another year.

Fortis lawyers' time would be better spent trying to get justice in the X6 case.

              This is ridiculous!!!!

If ever there was a time to scrap SCQ, and go Robo, that time seems like NOW!

I've been observing this SCQ issue with both amusement & horror

Ok...there's nothing intrinsically wrong with SCQ and it does have historical significance

                BUT

SCQ represents mid-20th Century thinking...it's a dinosaur. It celebrates rote learning & regurgitation of facts...the exact approaches to education we should be moving away from

It's the dinosaur thinking which views a SCQ as being "very important" and the "apex of our academic competition" which needs to change

Unfortunately even our senior academic class (e.g. Vasciannie )is backward and trapped in the 1960s-1970s

THE KINGSTON COLLEGE - CAMPION COLLEGE SCHOOLS' CHALLENGE QUIZ ("SCQ") DEBACLE!

Folks, I have maintained my silence regarding the captioned issue as I wanted to allow the Kingston College ("KC) administration (via the principal et al) and Television Jamaica ("TVJ") to resolve the controversy without more rhetoric adding fuel to the fire. The reason I am now writing is that TVJ has been very dismissive and disrespectful in its treatment of KC, the administrators and the issues.

Suppose it was a penalty wrongly allowed or not called that affected the outcome of the game at the last minute ...?

Has TVJ publicly said what was the issue?

I find it outrageous that QC Ian Wilkinson took the time to write this lengthy protest. The fact is, the KC-Campion issue is completely different from the Ardenne-Camperdown one.

The match has ended. Maybe some mistakes were made, but that is how the cookie crumbles. It happens in life all the time. Wrong decisions are made in the court room, on the football field, etc., and we have to suck it up, and move the hell on.

TVJ will not reverse the decision. The next amendment for the rule book is to expel any school that takes TVJ to court!
