Private sector interests say JLP's tax proposal not feasible
    6:10 pm, Fri February 19, 2016

A team from the private sector tasked with reviewing the opposition Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) tax proposal has punched holes in the suggested reforms and has concluded that it will not work.

RJR News obtained a copy of a document titled "Assessment of PAYE Reform Proposals-Private and Confidential" which provides a detailed analysis of the JLP proposal.

In the three page document, the team assessed the JLP's proposal to remove personal income tax from the salaries of those earning up to $1.5m annually and it found the proposal wanting on various levels.

Former PSOJ President admits to analysing JLP's Income Tax plan

    2:44 pm, Sun February 21, 2016

Former President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSO), Joseph Matalon, has revealed himself to be the person behind the analysis of the JLP's Income Tax Plan which RJR News first reported on Friday.

Matalon, in a full page article in the Sunday Gleaner said the plan was "unworkable" .

Since RJR NEWS reported on Friday that private sector interests have punched holes into the JLP's plan to raise the income tax threshold to $1.5 million, the station has come under heavy criticism on social media for publishing a report the PSOJ says it did not author.

RJR NEWS did not give paternity of the report to the PSOJ, however, on Sunday, Matalon gave a detailed report stating that the proposal is inequitable - in that it could see someone earning up to $1.8 million aking home less than a person earning $1.5 million.

The tax team said given that distortionary impact...people earning up to $1. 8 million may ask their employees for a salary cut, just to take home more money.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Petah's skool pal boosts Termites with Red Stripe move...

...Somehow the timing of this announcement seems very Termite-Friendly

Red Stripe move sends a positive signal - Phillips
            7:30 am, Thu February 18, 2016

Dr. Peter Phillips, Jamaica's Finance Minister, has cited Red Stripe's decision to return production of up to two million cases of beer annually for the North American market to its facility in Kingston as a signal that the country's economic reform programme is working.

The company had moved the production for North American consumers to the USA several years ago, in a bid to take advantage of better incentives there.

Dr Phillips was speaking at the announcement ceremony on Wednesday, in which Red Stripe explained that producing its beer for North America in Jamaica will create up to three thousand jobs, including 170 at Red Stripe.

Can't beleive the labour wrongs meant it that way. How a tax threshold usually works is those above pay tax on the net above the threshold not the whole amount of their income.

Exactly, that is like progressive taxation 101.

That nobody in the JLP has tried to even spin it that way is more evidence that they are not ready.

Apparently they cannot win an election anymore, PNP has to lose it.
