Dear Editor,
In light of the recent revelations in the contractor general's report to Parliament and referring to the billions of dollars worth of breaches in the award of government contracts and other revelations by the auditor general about wastefulness, the Executive of the National Democratic Movement is concerned that both the PNP and the JLP have remained silent on the issues.
The NDM is disgusted and outraged at yet again more disclosures of massive waste and possibly corruption with regard to billions of taxpayers' dollars through the award of government contracts.
Chief among these is the attempt to procure overpriced health insurance services (benefits) for public sector workers as revealed in the recent auditor general's and the contractor general's reports, and is concerned but not surprised at the stony silence of both the government and parliamentary Opposition in the face of such blatantly wasteful and disgraceful attempts at improper practices.
The NDM laments that while the two old political parties fight for the power "at the centre of the trough", the country's resources go to waste in the pockets of people in key positions who may be collecting kickbacks and enrichment at the expense of the nation and against the interest of the people of Jamaica.
The NDM commends both the auditor general and the contractor general for standing up strongly for principle and proper procedures which may finally break the cycle in one area of seemingly improper awarding of the public-sector health contract which for decades incurred additional burdens on the already overburdened taxpayers. The savings to the taxpayer of nearly $200 million per year is a victory for good governance and correct procedures.
The NDM is also concerned that both a former PNP minister and a junior minister could use the House to lambast those who stand up and do things the right way. The disgraceful attacks on the offices of the auditor general and the contractor general are a new low in our downward spiral in the daily political life of our beautiful but grossly mismanaged country.
The real tragedy is that while we squander billions in all types of hare-brained schemes and projects, we cannot allocate funds and devise a proper plan to provide basic education and good nutrition to ensure that the almost 60,000 babies born annually will acquire the ability to read and write and reason.
