Why Did Joss Stone Sell More Reggae Albums Than Any Black Artist in 2015?

Joss Stone was crowned Billboard’s Reggae Artist of the Year, highlighting the whiteness of pop consumer tastes. Music fans should take stock of their biases.

Billboard announced Tuesday that British soul singer Joss Stone is their Reggae Artist of the Year, and the “accolade” sparked widespread scoffs and criticisms on social media. In a year when race, appropriation, and white privilege have been constant points of national conversation, one of the country’s biggest music media platforms continues to rub salt in the proverbial wound of the Black music-buying public.

As black commentators have only gotten more adamant in drawing attention to the industry’s penchant for celebrating white faces in black genres, Billboard has delivered an impressive litany of Caucasity-informed faux pas that fly in the face of good taste and judgement: its head-scratching Greatest Rappers list, a borderline-insulting Greatest R&B artists list, its ongoing commitment to legitimizing Iggy Azalea, delivering the single whitest music-related awards show in a season overstuffed with them and now—it’s crowned the most unconvincing soul singer in pop as reggae artist of 2015.

But now a 22-year-old woman from Chester is trying to change that. Ava Leigh has a powerful voice like retro-soul divas Duffy and Adele – but she sets it to a lilting Jamaican beat. I watched her perform at London’s Jazz Café a year ago, supporting the Seventies roots singer Freddie McGregor. Leigh took to the stage barefoot, and when she spoke between songs, she wasn’t pretending to be black, or from Kingston, or from Hackney, or even to be “street”. She was simply herself, singing beautifully in a style that she inhabited totally through her sheer enthusiasm.

It's already happened with ska, are we losing lovers rock too?

Billboard's awards are based, as I understand it, purely on sales.

A friend of mine, JC alumnus, wrote an opinion on this on his FB and I'm going ask him if I could reprint it. He's in the music business and married to a renowned reggae singer. Essentially he laments that black reggae artistes generally not doing what it takes to get the sales.

I don't want to misquote him, (Merry Chrismas again X ) so I'll check and re-post if I get the go ahead.

                    Bounti Blasts Billboard!

NEVER one to shy away from controversy, Bounty Killer has hit out against Billboard Magazine for naming British singer Joss Stone Reggae Artiste of The Year. The fiery deejay also had some harsh words for Jamaica’s Government.

He took to Instagram after reading a story published in the Jamaica Observer on December 22 about Stone’s latest accomplishment.

Addressing the Jamaican government, Bounty Killer (given name Rodney Pryce) ques- tioned their seriousness about preserving reggae. “What measures are implemented for a genre birthed on the island which is widely celebrated elsewhere, giving others the chance to benefit more than us? How many more Matisyahus, Eddy Murphys and Josh Stones will there be to benefit more than our people who do not fall short on talent?”

Agreed Brick , but I cant see what Selassie have to do with it , in fact singing about Selassie put that music on the world map

                            http://www.reggae-vibes.com/concert/...eggaeindia.htm

Personally, I cant see why everyone is looking to the government as some savior for the music, have they every been an advocate for it ?

Jamaican music and I say that to cover all its genre suffers from a lack of professionalism ,quality and organization that is killing it.They can all eat a food in the Jamaican music market, be it ska, dub, Dj music, lovers rock, roots etc,the ignorance is manifested when they talk about it in a general term/sense (reggae) .

If we can look what musicians are doing here in the states, ska and jazz are becoming more and more synonymous, why because its instruemental music with a required technique catered to a niche market, you wouldnt play that with dub,dj music or any other form of music and its catered to a different niche, same thing with lovers rock , dub and DJ music all niche music.

I am schocked Sanchez and Beres are booked as old school or vintage on some venues, Sanchez nuh ole ?

The airplay on the radio caters to an ignorant population that cannot understand good music in Jamaica.Where are our hornsmen, our piano players etc , ska had piano influence .

                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef7bCWyCvIE

If government should play a part in music , it needs to let all musical instruementals of horns, pianos, violins, guitars etc be tax free.TAX ALL ELETRONIC MUSICAL DEVICES HARSHLY.

Producers, musicians, promoters, record companies (BLACKWELL ,TUFF GONG, PENTHOUSE etc ) , need to come together and cater to the niches in the market. The toursist market use to be a venue and source of income for musicians. That seems to be dead, unless they are doing cover of "one love " Bob marley, this needs a revisit by our musicians, maybe government can do someting there , but with collaboration from the hoteliers , that could be a spring to develop the locals.

                            Just my opinion.

Stone’s reggae debut, Water for Your Soul, sold 29,000 copies
Even in today's digital music world, when the best selling album in a genre sells less than 30,000 copies it won't take much for a mainstream artiste with a large fan base to outsell everyone else with an experimental album.

That is the bigger issue in my view.
