1. Turkey (currently run by hardline Islamists) is a member of NATO. The US runs NATO and has veto power over ANY member's military action

2. Both the US and Turkey have the PRIMARY goal of ousting Assad... so they BOTH arm, train, provide intelligence support & political cover for the assorted Sunni terrorist groups also interested in his ouster

3. Turkey is a key member of the "coalition" of forces led by the US that's supposedly "fighting terrorists" in Syria for over a year. See above for their real purpose. Interestingly in that year+ of "fighting terrorists"... said assorted terrorists have EXPANDED their territory & influence in Syria

4. Russia enters the Syria chess game ~2 months ago with a goal of supporting the Assad govt. Syria is a long term Russian ally since the 1970s. Syria provides Russia with its ONLY year-round ice-free port. Without Syria Russia is hemmed in at home during the winter...and subject to being bottled up by the NATO-controlled Bosporus straits in the Black Sea.

5. The Russian bombing is severely disrupting terrorists and what the US describes as "moderate opposition"...In reality that "moderate opposition" is fluid...at various times includind Al Nusra Front, Al Qaeda and other recognized terror groups So US/West/Turkey/Saudi etc anti-Assad plans are being foiled ...Clearly this axis must respond to the Russian chess move

6. So Turkey as NATO member, coalition partner, host of US forces in the region...and main supporter of TERROR groups in the region (along with Saudi Arabia) ....decides to splash a Russian jet ...supposedly for a 17 second incursion over its border

7. IMMEDIATELY the US/West/NATO closes ranks and supports Turkey's "right to defend itself" This is clearly a specious & hypocritical excuse since Turkey was never under attack nor would have any credible reason to believe so

Geo-pol 101 Conclusion: The incident was a US/Turkey ambush. A provocation designed to punish Russia and "impose costs" on that country for having the temerity to interfere with well laid plans..Obama and US Def Sec Carter promised such costs

Now the next move is Russia's. I suspect Putin may actually visit Syria for the propaganda value & to shore up troop morale (That would be a globally-covered event if it occurred and a HUGE signal of resolve) ....then execute a massive bombing of Turkmen terror groups (i.e. US/Turkey "freedom fighters" ) along the Syria border... along with other US-supported terror targets throughout Turkey

The full Russian strategic air arm will be unleashed...Backfire, Bear and Blackjack strategic bombers will be pounding Syria by next week...along with surface ship & submarine cruise missile strikes from the Caspian & Mediterranean seas

Syrian troops backed by Russian airstrikes captured areas from the Islamic State group in the central province of Homs on Monday, in the latest push since the aerial campaign began nearly two months ago, state media and a monitoring group said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops backed by pro-government gunmen entered the town of Mheen and the nearby village of Hawareen after midnight Sunday and were in full control of the area hours later.

Good but you missed the oil price factor. Cheap oil is wrecking Russia's oil export income. The Anti Assad groups in this area were selling cheap Syrian oil via trucks to Turkey. Russia started bombing the oil fields and tankers last week and Turkey warned them a few days ago to stop or there would be serious consequences. Putin has now told Turkey that there will be serious consequences because of this shoot down i.e. we will shoot down your planes. Yes, the air war in that sector is coming. Let's hope that it does not lead to World War 3 because any war after World War 3 will be fought with sticks and stones.

Syria is inconsequential in the oil business.

The dribs & drabs of oil that Turkey handles for ISIS is significant income for the Turkish officials involved and for their ISIS allies (which the US conveniently ignores) ...but that doesn't move the needle on overall oil pricing in the least. So Russia would not be concerned about ISIS oil affecting them when they're so many bigger fish to fry

But you're correct that Turkey's leaders (whose connections are profiting fro ISIS oil biz (said to be US$1m+/day) are not happy about Russia bombing ISIS oil infrastructure... and the Russian Fencer plane strike could also be a reaction to that

It's interesting that in its year+ bombing in Syria...the US NEVER torched ISIS oil works..until Russian strikes shamed them into doing so just in the last week or two A very duplicitous game the US is playing in Syria...But that's how Global Chess is done

The re-entry to the market of a post-sanctions Iran definitely will affect oil pricing though
