  • The inequity of Western media :Jawge

In the aftermath of the continuous Western media coverage of the Paris attacks by ISIS that killed 129 people, the "Black Lives Matter" movement in the United States has raised questions about similar atrocities against black people that are either ignored or receive scant attention.

How many people know or remember that 148 people -- 19 more than in Paris -- were murdered by al-Shabab militants who stormed the dormitories of Garissa University College in Kenya in a siege that lasted 15 hours last April? That horrific event received very little coverage at the time by the international television networks, such as CNN and Fox in the United States, and the BBC in Britain. Certainly the coverage was not as continuous, analytical, or affronted as the reporting of the Paris events, and it did not reflect the same level of indignation.

US ambassador lashes those not condemning Paris terrorist attacks
    Monday, November 23, 2015 134 Comments

United States Ambassador Luis G Moreno described anyone who did not condemn the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, France as "reprehensible".

Moreno's comments came in his keynote address at the Jamaica's Women's Entrepreneurship Day (WED) 2015 celebration last week, as France mourned the death of 129 persons and the injury of more than 350 in the attacks carried out by Islamic State terrorists in the French capital.

Speaking on the significance of community and its importance in creating a safe environment for entrepreneurs, Moreno used the opportunity to make his point about the Paris terror attacks.

"It's about community.. It's what we are...When someone hurts our community including what occurred in Paris it affects us all...And those (in Jamaica and abroad) that openly refuse to condemn such acts are reprehensible," he said.

I think it is futile to expect the Western media to give all of these stories the same weight for the simple reason that they are...well the WESTERN media. Their primary consumers have little to no interest in stories outside of their sphere of existence.

The solution is more local news sources with an international reach. Africa for example, needs a news network along the lines of Al Jazeera.

Chicago Nails First Cop for Murder in History for Shooting Black Teen

Van Dyke has been the subject of 18 complaints ranging from using racial epithets to excessive force to illegally arresting people, according to personnel records obtained by the Invisible Institute, a police-accountability nonprofit.

The indictment comes a day before dashcam footage of the shooting must be released, according to an order last week by Cook County Judge Franklin Valderrama. The video wasn’t supposed to be released after the city settled with McDonald’s family for $5 million. But a lawsuit filed against police by independent journalist Brandon Smith will show the public what happened.
