  • For the STEM nerds, a big breakthrough in space travel

yesterday. Jeff Bezos' comapny Blue Origin was able to launch a rocket into space and land it back on Earth in one piece. In effect it was the first successful test of a reusable rocket. Elon Musk (of Tesla fame) has been working on doing this at his company SpaceX for a while and are getting very close, but Bezos beat him to it.

The impications are quite significant, as reliable reusable rockets will cut the cost of space travel by several orders of magnitude. It is the first step in making a commercial trip to Mars economically feasible .Musk estimates a ticket price of about US$500K as what it will take for a Mars "cruise" to be affordable enough.

Hopefully these two well accomplished billionares will get into a pi$$iing contest and continue to drive innovation forward. The Cold War era space race to the moon is responsible for the development of many of the technologies we use as consumers today. Another space race, in the private sector this time, could provide the breakthrough needed to once again go where no man has gone before.

One difference between the Blue Origin and SpaceX approach , is that Space X is trying to land their rocket on a barge at sea, which is of course harder to do.

The advantage with the barge approach is that they would be able to take more payload (ie more space cargo and ultimately more $500K passengers) with each trip.

And I guess it's a softer landing in case it misses?

          Actually yes, and more isolated.
