Hmm, I have never flown on SouthWest. JetBlue only use new planes, leather seats and TVS. Those are not cheap! What is cheap about JetBlue. no cooked meals, no first class service?
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.
Ticket prices. Jetblue and Southwest are considered no frills, low overhead airlines which usually have cheaper prices.
That doesn't mean they have old and unreliable planes, but they have lower overhead mainly because they don't have the pension and other high employee costs that the older airlines are carrying.

Also be careful of the extra charges like baggage, pre booking seats etc.
For me not much difference as I don't usually fly more than 3 or 4 hours on these airlines. Some of the have newer planes and flight is not bad.

I'm more worried about the planes from whichever company that do many trips each day. Some of these US airlines where pilots and crew don't get enough rest, and where there isn't enough time to do regular maintenance checks on the aircraft.
I always feel better when I'm flying on a rested plane, rather than one I see just taxiing to the gate and about to jump to another airport.
Certainly, the article was not trying to make a point about cheap airlines vs. expensive ones. There could be some real info there, but this was not the study on such.
Took Ryan Air from Ireland to UK once on a weekend, it was nothing short of a Mini Van ride but something like 35 pound.
