Democracy: A maze to good governance

In a world exposed to totalitarianism, and its side effects, an alternate school of thought commonly defined as democracy seems most auspicious as this explosive brand of politics permeates throughout Latin American, African, Asian, and the Eastern bloc territories.

A once-famous US President Abraham Lincoln, in deference to the universal concept, augmented the political lexicon with a memorable maxim that promotes design and purpose -- government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Nonetheless, the collective term which is emblematic of inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, dignity, and the fundamental rights of the individual, and simultaneously gives voice to a wide variety of regimes, embodies complexities in approach towards an ideal form of governance.

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Minister of Justice Senator Mark Golding

THE United States Department posted its report on Jamaica's human rights practices for 2014 and revealed a damning picture on the current state of Jamaica's justice system.

The Minister of Justice Senator Mark Golding has received a poor grade and, quite frankly, had it not been for the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) -- a Jamaica Labour Party creation -- Jamaica's human rights grade would have been far worse.

There is an urgent need for us to have a comprehensive and inclusive conversation about constitutional reform. It is necessary, especially in the context of a nation 53 years independent with no major constitutional reform in many areas.

It is accordingly appropriate that one should reflect on the experience with our Independence constitution that was enacted in 1962, as well as on some of the proposals which have been advanced for reform of the constitution in several reform commissions.
