Power company to investigate death of child by light pole
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has launched an investigation into the death of a toddler in Mollison, Manchester.
Young Delano Williams died after being crushed by one of its concrete utility poles on Tuesday night.
Speaking on Beyond the Headlines on Wednesday, Corporate Communications Manager at the JPS, Winsome Callum, said the police have also been called in alongside the company's investigators to look into the incident.
It is reported that the pole, which was reportedly placed at the side of the road, loosened and rolled down an incline into the path of a group of children who were on their way from a community centre in the area.
Miss Callum said in light of the tragedy, the company will be re-examining its safety practices.
According to Miss Callum, the contractor employed by the utility company, Bradford and Brooks Electrical, placed poles in the area to replace wooden ones.
The work was slated to be carried out on Thursday.
In the meantime, Miss Callum says the JPS has already met with the parents of the child in a bid to provide them with whatever assistance they may need.
She said members of JPS' parish office are in contact with Delano's mother Rosemarie Dixon.
