Verbal sparring between JCC and Development Minister continues

The war of words involving members of the business community and Development Minister Donald Buchanan is continuing.

President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Mark Myers, told members of the media Tuesday that Mr. Buchanan was too defensive.

Mr. Myers said the chamber was concerned about the confrontational response from Mr. Buchanan.

He said rather than attacking the private sector for pointing out that Jamaica remains a difficult place to do business the Government should work to improve the commercial environment.

Mr. Myers claimed that the treatment being meted out to foreign and local investors by the government was not the same.

He said while the foreigners received more incentives, local entrepreneurs had to contend with high taxation, low incentives and a maze of bureaucratic red tape.

Within this context, the JCC President challenged the next political administration to complete the process of improving the business sector.

The root of the disagreement stems from Mr. Buchanan's response to a statement made by businessman Gassan Azan about difficulties faced by the business community.

The Development Minister fired back saying the statement was far from true.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
