  • Criteria for an MP

    • (a) the candidate must be a people-person who can interact comfortably with all strata of the society, even if hypocritically so, which means that he must have above average acting skills;
    • (b) he must be someone that can "hold 'im waters" (in other words, a good rum drinker); and
    • (c) in a homophobic society, he must be seen and known as a "girls' man";
    • (d) he must be able to "let off" at all times which means that he must be well-heeled ( a "money man" or one who can easily access party, private sector or government "resources");
    • (e) he must be "one a we" (varying interpretations include black and come from the grassroots; is a diehard comrade or labourite (never switched party allegiance);
    • (f) must be very eloquent (can "chat sweet" even if what he says does not make much sense);
    • (g) must have a high visibility in the constituency, even if "he's not doing anything worthwhile for the people");
    • (h)and, finally, most important, in the case of the PNP, the person must assiduously abide by the party's principles, while for the JLP candidate, he must be fully supportive of the leader and what he stands for.
