Government to make changes to CHEC agreement
BY ALPHEA SAUNDERS Senior staff reporter saundersa@jamaicaobserver.com

    Friday, May 22, 2015

THE Government has signalled its intention to make changes to its concession agreement with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for the construction of the north-south link of Highway 2000 to facilitate the speed at which the company is moving ahead with its own private development plans.Transport and Works Minister Dr Omar Davies said he will be seeking to have Cabinet amend the concession agreement to facilitate CHEC's plans to construct three hotels, 600 houses, and develop commercial properties.

In the meantime, Dr Davies also said a source of financing has now been identified for the construction of the proposed southern coastal highway, which preliminary estimates put at close to $1 billion (US$250 million ) for the first phase. Section one of the highway, which will link Kingston to Manchester , includes Harbour View to Port Antonio, starting with the Harbour View to Morant Bay leg.

What the hell is the article saying? The highway which will link Kgn to Manchester will include Harbor View to Port Antonio?

Anyway I am crossing my fingers for the Morant Bay and Port Antonio sections. It would be a game changer for Eastern St Thomas and Eastern Portland which are probably the least travelled areas of Jamaica

Since the Chinese are entitled to 1200 acres..

....DO NOT offer them ecologically sensitive Roaring River properties... What about aa chunk of theHarmony Cove lands which are slated for mass tourism?

Despite an online petition for the Jamaican Government not to give the Roaring River lands in St Ann to the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), Dr Omar Davies, the transport, works and housing minister, said transferring the lands to the Chinese would be a significant boost to economic activity on the island.

?One of the reasons we are attracted to the 150 acres, which we are now discussing, is that we are now speaking about another US$500 million of investment, which will flow immediately in terms of 2,400 hotel rooms. That is, in a sense, investment that Minister McNeill never envisioned,? Davies said.
