Definitely not looking for a "nice" fix, but I am hoping for an "effective" fix.

If the end result is that the majority is worse off than they were before, and only a few connected people benefit I don't see how that is a success.

I don't think dicatatorship is required, Africa certainly does not have a good record when that path is followed. However a strong government role is necessary, maybe some special powers for a limited time. Even that approach will only work with a strong, competent and largely incorruptible leader at the helm though. Those have not been easy to find.

      No easy answers I'man.

Sometimes in an effort to find a solution, even the off-the-wall ideas are fair game.

HL,you are into horseback riding,if you capture a wild horse and try to ride it,it will do everything it can to prevent you,to be succesful, you have to break it.
Prison achieves the same ,and the usual suspects (those that had no problem with apartheid)came out unabashedly in droves to be seen right next to Mandela welcoming the facade of change.
Sure the initial wave of attacks are shamelessly carried out on fellow Africans but it is an attack on the system itself.

Very deep and well thought out commentary Rockman.

Ultimately, it starts with the individual. Also, how well we work with each other to a common end...while maintaining our petty differences.

Actually the only Mugabe policy that did work (other than education) was the land policy. On education, before sanctions Zimbabwe had a 93 % literacy rate the highest in Africa also higher than Jamaica's unfortunately.

This is an example of a government attempting a simplistic solution to a difficult problem. Looks like some good sense prevalied in the end.

LUSAKA, Zambia (AFP) — Zambia on Monday slashed by more than half a controversial mineral royalty tax after investors threatened to pull out of the copper-rich country.

"Mineral royalty tax rate for opencast mining and underground mine operations will be pegged at 9.0 per cent," down from 20 per cent imposed in January, government spokesman Vincent Mwale said in a statement.

Mining companies had been up in arms after the government raised the royalty levy by threefold from 6.0 per cent.

The very sad thing is that outsiders almost always have the upper hand in the economies of these countries.

(Offered the opportunity to do some good work in Zambia in the early 90's. Was not in the position [then] to take it. The consolation is: what's not yours is just not yours).

It is very sad and not easily reversed.
