Dear Editor,
The selection of Lisa Hanna to represent the PNP is a perfect example of what is wrong with Jamaica.
First, Lisa Hanna, a perfectly wonderful lady, was a member of the JLP up until May 25, 2007. Hence, being a member of the PNP is not a prerequisite for being put forward as a candidate for the PNP.
Joining the PNP, working your way up from the youth organisation, attending rallies, being a comrade, is no qualification for office in the PNP. In fact, anyone who wants to run for the PNP would be well advised to join the Jamaica Labour Party.
Second, being politically active to the extent of voting is not necessary. One may be politically ignorant and still run for Parliament on the PNP ticket. Third, hard work, participation is a waste of time. You know it if you've ever applied for a position in Jamaica. It's who you know, who knows you, or your family.
Fourth, democracy is a nice word that has no meaning. Selections, not elections rule the day. A party leader can appoint a dog and tell the party faithful to vote for it; true in 1962, and proved by the president of the PNP in 2007.
The president decides who runs; party machinery be damned. So the sheep can blow trumpets, march around in their orange shouting, "Two legs good, four legs better!" as they ride into the slaughterhouse.
If you didn't know it before, you know it now; being a PNP diehard proves you are just too stupid to run as a candidate.
