But Garvey was charged with mail fraud in the USA and Bag-a-Wire is a Jamaican figure, nuh so?

I believe there is some amount of urban legend regarding this character. At the very least I think his role has been exaggerated, to create an enemy that Garveyites can rally against.

It is more likely that he was involved with the so-called "rice and peas" sellout of Marcus when he ran for local elections in Jamaica.

Very good info Sass. Thanks. Unfortunately, I think we have failed to appreciate the full import of this little short man.

Some very good accounts on activism in early 20th century Jamaica on that page.

One interesting thing I find about Garveys legacy which is also mentioned in one of those stories, is that Rasta was not embraced by early Garveyites. Maybe they were too radical, maybe there was some amount of intellectual/social prejudice, and maybe even generational differences played a role. Yet without a doubt it is Rasta that preserved Garveys legacy during those pre-independence days.

in context some of the Garveyites may have thought that some of the rastas while liking some of the Garvey work may not live up to some of his teachings. Something you see in Christianity. Also some rastas may not seek knowledge from Garveyites who felt they had all knowledge on everything Garvey. There may also be a little generation gap involved.

It is very sad that there is not much reading on Garvey in Jamaica and so many aspect of his life is not even discuss. If many don't hear Burning Spear or other artists Garvey is not discussed.

The place next to hell.... Jamaica! Marcus Garvey.
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
