    Corrupt policemen sent to prison
    published: Thursday | June 7, 2007

    Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

Two policemen and their relatives wept openly in court yesterday after the policemen were ordered by the Court of Appeal to serve their prison sentences for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Cpl. Ean McKenzie is to serve four months' imprisonment, while Const. Colin Smith will serve three months.

Resident Magistrate Marva McDonald Bishop had sentenced them in July 2005 after she found them guilty of the charge.

    Accepting money

The policemen, who were attached to the Area Three Highway Patrol, Manchester, were found guilty of accepting $8,000 from a motorist to withdraw five traffic tickets.

After the policemen demanded payment, the motorist reported the matter to officers at the Internal Affairs Division.

The two were arrested in Mandeville, Manchester in a sting operation on May 7, 2002, shortly after they accepted the money from the motorist.
