U.S.-Cuba thaw may rock Caribbean tourism

One of the big questions following President Barack Obama’s decision to significantly expand U.S. tourism to Cuba will be how much it will affect other Caribbean tourism destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Cancun, Mexico. Independent experts say Cancun will be among the most hurt.

This is what I am talking about when i say it is not a zero-sum game where one countries or companies gain is simply anothers loss. The tourism pie size is not fixed, the number of potential tourists are not fixed, the types of attractions and entertainment are not fixed.

We are not talking about just another Caribbean beach destination here. There is always opportunity. Countries like Jamaica should thank Obama for putting them on notice and giving them time to respond and adjust. Wether we will actually do anything to adjust is another story though.

And Jamaica has a long running start ahead of Cuba........

They could lose this advantage if the adjustment is not made.

The start means nothing. We keep on holding to been first but look at Domincan Republic. We had 2 million tourist in the eighties when whey had a little or no tourist and now they have 6 million annually. By the time we reach 4 million Cuba would already double their output at the rate we are going.

We can all benefit but we have to be more proactive.
