Marlon Schnieder, a Wisconsin state legislator, has written Wisconsin's congresssional delegation asking for an amendment to the US Constitution
barring martial law, a military coup, or a dictatorship should Washington, DC ever get wiped off the map. He said state governors should choose the next leader.

The order of succession according to the US Constitution if the President dies or resigns is 1) the Vice President; 2) The Speaker Of the House Of Representatives, 3) the President PRO TEM of the US Senate; 4) the Secretary Of State; and then proceeds down the list of the remaining members of the Cabinet.

The Vice President presides over meetings of the US Senate. The PRESIDENT PRO TEM Of The Senate, an elected US Senator, presides over
Senate meetings in the absence of the Vice President.
