    Jamaica rates poor in Global Peace Index (also USA)
    Thu, 31 May 2007 12:21:44 Global Peace Index study ranks 121 countries according to their serenity and factors that cause and sustain peace.
    Jamaica has ranked 81 among 121 world states in a first study to grade countries according to their serenity and peace factors.

    The study - the Global Peace Index - released on Wednesday was conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, a division of the Economist publication and was funded by Australian businessman Steve Killelea.

    The study used 24 indicators, including military spending, easily accessed 'weapons of minor destruction', guns, small explosives, corruption and respect for human rights.

    Norway ranked as the world's most peaceful country, with Iraq the least peaceful.

    America which possesses many characteristics of high democracy levels and transparency, education and material well-being stood at 96.

    Cuba ranked 56, Trinidad and Tobago 94, Venezuela 102. Japan, ranked five and Russia stood at 118.

    Countries like Ireland and Germany which used to battlegrounds in the 20th century emerged as peace leaders in the 21st century grading five and 12 respectively.

    The most peaceful African countries were Tunisia (39), Ghana (40). Sudan the least peaceful ranked second last at 120, while Zimbabwe was positioned at 106. Bhutan ranked 19.
