Digicel to build islandwide cable TV network within 3 years
    Friday, September 12, 2014

DIGICEL plans to build out an islandwide digital cable and home broadband network within three years, says Barry O'Brien.

The acquisition of Telstar and the islandwide expansion of its cable footprint is a strategic move to position the telecommunications firm to enter the subscriber TV market; push its broadband Internet business; and eventually offer fixed-line services, said the chief executive officer of Digicel Jamaica.

    What About FLOW?

So, wasn’t FLOW’s innovations several years ago “admirable game changers” as well (including HD TV as well as their own submarine cables ensuring uninterrupted supplies during hurricanes)?

I'm not concerned with more cable TV watching.... just broadband services

Digicel has an unsurpassed record of delivering ubiquitous mobile telephony in Jamaica thereby revolutionizing that market. Plus their marketing/customer education is stellar.

It is reasonable to expect that their expansion into the fixed line market will grow overall broadband market penetration and increase the competition for legacy operators Lime and FLOW.
That should drive more consumer access to broadband services and also put downward pressure on pricing. We saw this phenomenon with mobile.

Broadband expansion would assist growth in knowledge industries. Should that occur it would be a game changer in my view

Karl, are you an avowed disciple of Don1, else why did you make such a simplistic post?

Despite what Don1 realizes or does not realize, Digicel is NOT introducing broadband Internet service to Jamaica! Flow already has broadband in operation, along with other features such as completely digital TV and fast-speed broadband Internet.

So, whatever Digicel provides will be hardly anything new, as Flow has been providing them to much of Jamaica, along with bundled packages! Digicel, in fact, will have a lot of catching up to do!!

If I understand DON1's post correctly, he is not denying the service that FLOW provides or introduced. He is saying it will be a game changer because of the competition Digicel will provide, cheaper prices, more market penetration, more people can afford access etc etc. But I could be wrong

Thanks Za and Don1, and I apologize for misunderstanding Don's well intentioned post.

I now fully agree that it will be a most welcome game changer indeed!
