Something tells me that Nancy got nothing because in those days; she quite possibly signed away all the rights to this song.

The movie "Belly" first "relicked" it (inna same style) which gave it fame this side, now Reebok has it.

yeah if she has no rights to the song then she will possible get nothing. Producer will claim "Work for hire".

True it's so sad because in the 70s right up to early 80s, Ja's music was at its zenith. Seems as if the movie industry is attracted to the reggae with a sublime tempo (most of this came out in 70s through early 80s).

Check this one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zDE1kCXahE it shows how the jakans modified this jazz piece without it losing much. I actually sent the version to someone who is an expert in music. He got excited when I ttold him about it. Will check to see his response.

Not much has changed. You can still find a few artistes who will sign away their lives. Some still don't understand "royalties". Granted there is "work for hire" but a lot the artist don't even ask once you pay them a little upfront, they have no one collecting their royalties and do not register their songs.

I know that UWI always held forums on Reggae. What UWI could do is offer a certificate course for artists in the music industry; educating them on their rights (in terms of royalties and how to secure it) in the music industry. UWI can make money here by offering this course.

These talented musicians from Ja should get paid. They made some very good music.

It is pretty much at the hand of the producer and who own the rights. But also the some of the artist have no concern for how much is spend on production and promotion and give some good producers bad name.

It is not fair but easier for the producer to pay the artist for "work for hire" and take the music. The same thing happen to Bounty and No Doubt. He didn't take royalties and did his song as "work for hire" and when the song got big he got vex that he was not credited with royalties.

More accounting and records are needed and the entertainers need to know their rights and the difference between "work for hire" and ownership.

There is a TV series (can't recall which one) which used this track in one episode. It was quite refreshing to hear when it started to play. I would hop that Sister Nancy got some royalties from its use.

Techniques label own the rights to the production. Toots can claim some authorship. We all know that sister Nancy use to perform this song but will they claim work for hire? because base on this article, she was not a part any deal.
