  • Time To Revisit Manley’s “Home Guards”?

I am aware of issues that would be involved (see, for example, “Can a Civilian Police Force Work?” in The Daily Gleaner, Tuesday, May 12, 2009: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/2...ead/lead2.html ), but desperate times certainly call for desperate measures!

If you think about this statement, you will see the sense!

Slaying of Middleton Meadows residents leaves community in shock
Criminals have Middleton Meadows under siege — residents

BY KIMMO MATTHEWS Observer staff reporter matthewsk@jamaicaobserver.com

    Friday, August 22, 2014

ANGER, shock and a sense of despair permeated the quiet Middleton Meadows, in St Catherine yesterday, following the slaughtering of four of the community's residents by rampaging gunmen early Wednesday night.

Twenty-year-old Shana-Kay Simpson; her friend Garfield Simpson, 35; Recodel Jackson, 27; and 43-year-old Dean Pratt died after being shot multiple times in two separate incidents by three masked hoodlums who went on a robbery spree in the rustic community which sits between bustling Bog Walk and Linstead.

Police said the frightening series of events began about 9:00 pm when the thugs, one of whom was dressed in army fatigue, quietly made their way into the community.

We need to form a Gendarmarie…A police wing of the military, a reservist militia that will go in an quash any organized crime.

Jamaica is one of the most violent places on earth and I like the idea. The country needs self defense militias to fight gunmen and must patrol their own neighborhoods. A 17-year old can be trained to use an M16 in two weeks and perhaps a program should be setup for people to protect their neighborhoods. We are not ready and are incapable of coming up any creative solutions to fight crime anyway.
