Cash Crunch: Funds Dry Up For Human-Rights Lobbies

The reluctance of one local human-rights lobby to push the agenda of overseas backers has resulted in the curtailing of its operations, and the futures of similar organisations are in jeopardy as the ability to secure international funding to fight for citizens' rights has become increasingly difficult.

Yvonne McCalla-Sobers, who chairs advocacy group Families Against State Terrorism (FAST), told The Sunday Gleaner that the non-government organisation (NGO) has been unable to fulfil its mandate in recent times because of a lack of funding.

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

    Making The Deane's List

Mario Deane was in police custody at the time of his injury, so there can be no question that the police were responsible for his safety. Of course, that's different than saying the police are responsible for his death. But when those charged with his killing all of a sudden turned out to be two madman and a deaf-mute, I had to think to myself, "Wait deh ... . Sumting chikini! Dis nuh right!"

Is the law predictable? Does every spliff smoker fear being arrested and jailed and possibly dying at the end of the day? It seems to me that laws are sometimes used as a tool of selective oppression, an instrument used to capture and condemn subjectively per the whim/agenda of the law enforcers. Are our authorities seen to be fair? Whether or not so-called police death squads really exist, it is a matter of record that extrajudicial killings in Jamaica are alarmingly high. In 2012, 219 Jamaicans were killed by the police, nine more than the 210 killed by the police in 2011. And in 2013, 245 Jamaicans were killed by police.

      Police abuse

Think about reported beatings and verbal abuse at the hands of the police, and even death of persons in police custody. Hark back to the case of Agana Barrett in 1992 who died of suffocation in the Constant Spring lock-up after being crammed into a small cell with 16 other men. It took the State 11 years to award his mother $3.5m.

Fast-forward to 2014 where Mario Deane was arrested and taken into custody for possession of a ganja spliff. He died days later as a result of the beating he experienced while in the custody of the police. It took six days after Mario's death for the personnel on duty to be interdicted. Can our authorities really be deemed legitimate?

Data is needed to advocate social change , we can speculate but who can argue with Data.

How many Deanes do we have ,it shows abuse i.e physical, mental and co$$$t , how government spends its meager resources.Locking up peeople for a spliff and god knows what else, den dem bawl bout dem bruk.

No money for healthcare, schools, social programs, but money for housing and feeding spliff arrest.
