What about the wan pippel that is the same as 'one people' I did not realize that their was also a strong English influence in Suriname as well. I know there is Guyana next door but it seems the influence is deeper than that.
The Dutch translation for one people is 'een Volk' totally different so English is somehow embedded at a very prime level in the 'common talk'

Did you know Surinam has a cricket team? Three years ago I was in Ft Lauderdale at the Central Broward Regional Park where my son was in a football camp... I didn't realize the cricket stadium was right there and that same week there was an ICC tournament of the Americas; I happened to just stroll over to see what was going on and found this out. The six teams involved were: USA, Canada, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and get this... Argentina and Surinam!! It was a T20 tournament so each day I took at least two matches while my son played football next door, and from the stadium I could look across the field to see him play as well... I believe there were Guyanese on the Surinam team and Englishmen on the Argentina side...just my guess from hearing the players speak; English seemed to be the language the players on those South American teams were using.Peter R

Of Course It Does!!

Always remember that students in the South American nations of Guyana and Suriname sit both the CSEC and CAPE as their national exams. No other mainland country, except for Belize, does this.
And on this topic of a “yard feel”, you might want to check out Central America’s only English speaking country, Belize! You would be very surprised! Incidentally, Belize does the CSEC as their national exams as well.

Ok, well this one will blow you away, the shirt the guy puts on has the Surinam coat of arms which..... Looks similar to jamaica coat of arms, then I find out their cost of arms is of two Arawak Indians and of course ours is the same. There is some fundamental language connection between the two groups but there are also some issues with the naming of these people in Jamaica as Arawak Indians.
