Buying Air Jamaica was a bad deal, says T&T official






Trinidad and Tobago’s Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley says his country’s purchase of Air Jamaica was a bad deal.

The Patrick Manning administration of which Dr Rowley was a part, purchased Air Jamaica five years ago, spending approximately US$52 million as part of the acquisition.

But Rowley says the purchase was a bad one, pointing out that he never supported it.

The problem was always going to be a Trinidad airline buying a Jamaican one. That's like an airline from Hanover buying out Air Jamaica. When travelers Google "Air Hanover" they are immediately discouraged from flying on it. Seemiaseh?

Small nation states need to get out of the airline business. Better to focus on the airport infrastructure. Air Jamaica was sold/decommissioned at least 10 years too late.

This is not the 1960s where there were just a handful of international airlines and there was a fear of one pulling out of your market which would cause an immediate crisis. Today if the demand is there an airline will open up a route there.
