    Deadly beating

    Published: Thursday | August 7, 2014

Mario Deane of Rosemount in Montego Bay was unconscious for three days, battling for his life at the Cornwall Regional Hospital after suffering from serious head injuries he received at the Barnett Street Police Station in Montego Bay just hours after he was arrested for a ganja spliff on Sunday morning.

Ahh sah , where is the JFJ ...classic , how many more have been abused but havent reached this state.

If it was an uptown youth, then we might get a response but it would not reach this far would it ? only the dutty, zombie, idlers ,aggressive , garrison, addictive ,crazy yute dem.

"I don't want to stand by and watch my son die for a mere ganja spliff ... . I doubt that a spliff would attract more than $100 fine in the court."

Yesterday, his mother cried openly for her only son. She said that she would fight for justice for her son.

"He was in the care of the Government," she said, calling on Jamaicans all over the world to help her in this case.

"I need help - internally and externally. I need help in finding a good lawyer to provide justice for my son, and if the help comes from as far as the diaspora, I would appreciate it."

    Legalise it.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

After being locked up for a spliff, fact is the spliff was a mitigating factor. Is not liking the police a diss, doesnt he have that constitutional right ,not to like ! what if his grievances(not liking) are based on incarceration for a spliff ?

        Where is the JFJ ?

Classic because it goes back to the Chevannes report where he quoted a senior police officer that said it puts the police force against the community in its cultural use....a spliff.

spliff has nothing to do with his beating...of course he has a constitutional right not to like the police...but it would have happened if the guy was in for domestic abuse or robbery or whatever...

how yuh reach that conclusion? "beaten to death over a spliff" is sensationalism...dem beat him to death cause him diss them...that sound more logical...don't?

Logical ?....you detain a man for a spliff, he is about to be released and he voices his dislike of the police and you state , spliff has nothing to do with it ,i.e sensationalism ?

Has he any rights in voicing his dislike after being detained and about to be released over a spliff ?....could his voicing the dislike of the police force be with his detention over a spliff ?

Logical...maybe im juss nuh like dem and im shoulda keep quiet and forsake im rights because ganja illegal...knowing im could get a beaten.

look like police beat you and gi yuh brain damage...if the man was smoking a spliff and the police accosted him and beat him to death then you would have a point...he wasn't beaten to death over a spliff...he was incarcerated because of a spliff and beaten by the police for perceived disrespect...sound more logical right?

Percieved disrespect that was precipitated on whose part ? ..the police will say , his part ,he might argue others wise , and that is the problem with your logic.

Again I ask, does he have any rights to voice his disrespect to the police about any part of his incarceration, from arrest to bail to beaten ?

To say that the instigating factor (spliff) has no bearing is ambigious,it is what put him in that position, all what follows is a process of that action. From government paper work, gas money, light bill, food and water , to words exchanged, like to dislike.

I have a feeling the JFJ takes your tone.
