  • Ebola and Jamaica

Do you think the health care system in Jamaica is equipped and developed enough [if GOD forbids] an outbreak on the island?

I have in the past ventured on the ground of a few hospitals in Jamaica. In my opinion, from what I have seen-- it appears third world at best.

The African countries are having problems because their health care systems are overwhelmed by this and other human health issues.

My wish is that the Jamaican health care administrators are closely monitoring and have screening in place--to prevent any occurrence.

The Ministry of Health has been somewhat guarded in talking about the issue recently. They say they are doing so to prevent panic but I interpret that to mean that they are still putting together a proper response and plan of action.

HL, Jamaica is "third world" in case you didn't know

It would be wise though to continue to educate the population of the dangers of disease transmission, generally, through body fluids.

There would be chaos & panic in Jamaica. The number of hospitals per capita in Ja is consistent with third world countries. I doubt there are any facilities to treat & isolate persons infected with highly contagious diseases.

                Good submission Hortical One!

Jamaica's main focus MUST be on preventative screening and local education.

With time, the US and the WHO will get a handle on this disease.

The disease has been around from the mid 70s. Why is it no cure has been found as yet? We are currently trying experimental drugs on patients with the disease.

I think I can answer my question above. The 70s outbreak was not as widespread and have potential to cause a worldwide pandemic. Therefore there was no search for a cure by the research institutions and the large pharmaceutical companies. What if a few Africans die anyway? Now that the potential for it to spread, you will see them start putting resources to finding a cure.

                          So many things...

Yes, we could have a problem, due to shortage of medical supplies.

It is not that easy to spread Ebola and we DONT have the practice of relatives washing the body of their dead kin, (which is a major contributory factor to the spread). Also, some of what dem calling Ebola is a coverup for the widespread use of controversial anti-biotics that is banned in the West. this stuff causes orifice bleeding (symptom sounds familar?).

Kingston is badly under-hospitalled with UWI and KPH being the best bet. KPH is off limits due to insecurity for most uptowners. St Josephs is no longer Catholic and private and Medical Associates is barely passable. Andrews (= Maddens), well, the less said the better.
